Free open access medical education (FOAM) blogs and podcasts are an important part of medical education. In an effort to develop a conference format akin to the tried-and-true journal club, I developed a conference format that would teach the critical appraisal of blogs and podcasts using validated, evidence-based tools. I also created a one-stop website featuring all the materials that you would need to create such a conference at FOAM-Club.com.

This was a comprehensive analysis of the cumulative clinical experiences, including procedures, and patient and clinical characteristics of two classes of Emergency Medicine residents from the University of Cincinnati. I mentored Dr. Loftus in the development of a data dictionary, and through the development of our descriptive analysis which was the most detail oriented and broadly focused of its kind. We noted that despite the size and acuity of our hospital that Emergency Medicine residents still saw few resuscitations and performed few critical procedures. This study has implications for Emergency Medicine resident training in Pediatrics at small and large centers alike.

Competency based medical education is entering a new era, one with broad based assessment of trainees, specifically entrustable professional activities. I was a key contributor on this project where we used actual patient data to define quality measure for the assessment of resident performance derived from the electronic medical record for asthma, bronchiolitis, closed head injuries, and gastroenteritis. The future of resident evaluation will include review of practice habits data in concert with faculty ratings and narrative assessments. This project is one of the early steps in that direction.

This paper is a companion to our work to implement a system of competency measures using information derived from the electronic medical record. This project investigated 83 actual residents who cared for patients with asthma, bronchiolitis, and closed head injuries. We noted a wide range of our pre-defined quality indicators across encounters. This is the practical application of key metrics of evaluation in residents working in the ED, and represents an important step in our ongoing efforts to provide more robust and accurate assessment data for our trainees.

This video review-based study of senior pediatric resident performance of the rapid cardiopulmonary assessment on actual patients in the resuscitation area of the Emergency Department. I was the principal investigator in this project that helped define educational efforts (such as simulation training) for the residents working in the ED at our institution in the years since its publication.

This study detailed our efforts to develop an online orientation for residents rotating through the Emergency Department at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Following a targeted needs assessment, we developed a multimedia orientation to address the challenges of orienting 30-40 residents from a multitude of training levels and programs to our ED. The current version is live at pemcincinnati.com/orientation. This study was also my master’s in education thesis. I learned quite a bit about the full process of curriculum design.

This innovative project was one of my earliest efforts to investigate novel ways to educate trainees in the ED. This was a multi-site randomized intervention that was well coordinated an implemented. I was the site lead at Cincinnati Children’s and was responsible for the local IRB and project implementation and data collection. We found that residents can use online materials to supplement their learning and was produced in a time before the development of online training repositories that featured asynchronous materials.
